Art as Activism: 'Turn the Volume Up!' Unveils Voices of Change

By Editor • August 13, 2026 • 1 min read

The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University is set to unveil an impactful exhibition titled "Turn the Volume Up!" which explores the intersection of art and activism in American history. Opening on August 27 and running until July 11, 2027, this collection emphasizes art's role as a catalyst for social change and freedom of expression.

The exhibition features a diverse array of contemporary artists, including renowned figures like Spider Martin, whose powerful photographs captured the essence of Freedom Marches during the Civil Rights Movement, and Kara Walker, known for her provocative multimedia critiques of American racial history. Other notable contributors include the Guerilla Girls, Carrie Mae Weems, and Bruce Davidson, each showcasing their unique visual languages.

Organized into five thematic sections—Remarks, Organize, Records, Dissents, and Petitions—the exhibition showcases a variety of artistic forms, from photography to installations, all aimed at inspiring civic dialogue. The Guerilla Girls' iconic posters from the 1980s highlight the scarcity of representation for female artists, while Davidson's work reflects social disparities from the Jim Crow era to present-day urban struggles.

Throughout its duration, the exhibition will feature rotating pieces, ensuring that visitors experience a dynamic selection of works that provoke thought and encourage greater civic engagement. With pieces like Carol Summers' powerful anti-war screenprint, the exhibition promises to resonate deeply with audiences and spur conversations on pressing social issues.
