Assemble Your Own Alien-Inspired Desk Clock with MB&F's Nostromo

By Editor • August 31, 2026 • 1 min read

In a fascinating blend of art and engineering, luxury watchmaker MB&F has unveiled its latest creation, the Nostromo desk clock, which requires buyers to assemble it from 222 individual components. This unique offering, developed in collaboration with French clockmaker Maison Alcée, is priced at CHF 12,000 (approximately $14,840 USD), and promises an immersive construction experience akin to the beloved IKEA effect.

The Nostromo, designed by Maximilian Maertens to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the M.A.D.Gallery, features a striking chrome beetle-like design. The clock’s body is a symmetrical steel ovoid adorned with a vibrant peacock blue dial, while its three tapered legs add an intriguing aesthetic. The assembly process is not for the faint-hearted, taking around ten hours to complete, but it yields a functional mechanical clock boasting a 14-day power reserve and a switchable chime.

While most parts are left for the owner to piece together, the regulating organ arrives pre-assembled, ensuring that the clock operates accurately. The design is based on Maison Alcée's previous work, the Persée clock, but with a unique twist that allows for easier readability and a more dynamic appearance. The clock rotates on its legs, providing stability on uneven surfaces.

Attention to detail is paramount in this clock's design; slotted screws, brushed steel, and specially crafted tools ensure that even novice builders can handle the assembly with care. Each kit includes 17 tools, specifically designed to minimize the risk of damage during the building process.

With only 50 units available, the Nostromo offers a rare opportunity for horology enthusiasts to engage in a hands-on learning experience while crafting a unique timepiece. This clock isn't just a way to tell time; it’s a testament to the intricate beauty of mechanical craftsmanship.
