Australia Steps Up Aid as 39 Citizens Remain Missing in Nepal Disaster

By Editor • August 28, 2026 • 1 min read

In response to devastating floods in Nepal, Australia has pledged $3.6 million in aid and is sending additional consular staff to the affected region. Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced the increase in missing Australians to 39, up from 34, following the disaster triggered by a glacier collapse that has claimed at least 359 lives and left nearly 1,000 people unaccounted for.

The funding will support the UN's World Food Programme and Australian NGOs, while a crisis specialist has already arrived in Kathmandu.
