Urgent Flood Warning Issued as Lake on China-Nepal Border Rises

Authorities in China have raised alarms over a lake formed by a mudslide on the China-Nepal border, signaling a potential breach that could unleash devastating floodwaters downstream.
As of Friday morning, 499 residents and 555 tourists have been evacuated from the perilous area, with rising water levels expected to peak around September 1, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
The lake was created after a massive mudslide struck Gyirong in Tibet earlier this week, prompting fears for the safety of those in the vicinity. Forecasts indicate inflows may swell to approximately 3 million cubic meters in the coming days, exacerbating the risk of flooding, which has already led to the tragic loss of at least 359 lives in the region.
