Back-to-School Shopping Trends: Insights from Tanger CEO Stephen Yalof

The back-to-school shopping season is proving to be a vibrant mix of trends, as noted by Stephen Yalof, CEO of Tanger. With over $103 billion expected to be spent, families are approaching their purchases more thoughtfully this year.
Yalof reports that social media is heavily influencing the preferences of young shoppers, while parents are increasingly turning to AI for finding deals. Despite a more cautious approach to spending, shoppers are drawn to Tanger’s 42 shopping centers, which offer a variety of brands at discounted prices.
"Back-to-school is the second-biggest shopping event of the year, and we’re seeing families visiting our stores throughout the summer, not just waiting for Labor Day," Yalof explained. The demand for in-store shopping experiences remains strong, with consumers valuing the ability to touch products and engage with store staff.
Particularly among Gen Z, shopping is evolving into a social activity rather than just a transaction. Tanger’s diverse mix of brands—ranging from American Eagle to Lululemon—coupled with their loyalty program, enhances this experience by offering personalized discounts. As Yalof notes, Tanger centers are not just retail spots; they’re becoming community hubs, featuring dining, entertainment, and local events that encourage social interaction.
