BBC Pursues Trump Family Testimony in Defamation Case

The BBC is intensifying its legal battle with Donald Trump, seeking to subpoena members of his family for testimony related to a defamation lawsuit filed by the former president. Trump is suing the broadcaster over an edited episode of Panorama, which he claims misrepresented a speech he delivered before the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.

In court documents, the BBC's legal team revealed attempts made in May to serve subpoenas to Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., daughter Ivanka Trump, and son-in-law Jared Kushner. The BBC asserts that these family members may possess crucial insights into Trump’s intentions during his speech, which is central to the defamation claim.

Trump's legal representatives have denounced the BBC’s actions, claiming they are an attempt to harass him and his family while diverting attention from the broadcaster’s alleged liability. They maintain that the BBC has "intentionally defamed" the president through its editing choices.

Despite the BBC's previous apology for editing that misleadingly suggested Trump incited violence, they have sought to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing it does not meet defamation standards and was not available on U.S. platforms. Interestingly, Trump's legal team acknowledged that they lack evidence proving the documentary aired on services like BritBox or BBC.com.

Further complicating matters, Trump has recently dropped the BBC's commercial arm from his lawsuit after the broadcaster argued that it played no role in creating the controversial documentary. The case is set for a trial in February 2027, pending ongoing developments in the courtroom.
