Behind the Scenes of 'Tony': Filming Locations in Cape Cod

The new film 'Tony' takes audiences on a nostalgic journey exploring the early life of chef and author Anthony Bourdain, showcasing locations steeped in artistic history and personal significance. Directed by Matt Johnson, the film is based on Bourdain's memoir, 'Kitchen Confidential,' capturing pivotal moments of a young Bourdain's formative summer spent in Cape Cod.

Charlie Harrington, the locations manager for the film, emphasized the importance of authenticity throughout the production. "This is a real Cape Cod movie," Harrington stated, highlighting that almost all scenes were filmed on location, primarily in Provincetown and Dennis. Harrington, who shares Bourdain's age and experienced a similar summer in Provincetown, felt a profound connection to the project. "What would Tony think of this location?" he often pondered while scouting sites.

Filming took place during a bustling time in Provincetown, with the crew navigating the challenges of shooting in a popular resort town during peak season. Despite the busy streets filled with present-day establishments, the production team worked diligently to create a period-appropriate setting. They dressed the locations to reflect Bourdain's experiences, even as modern signs and businesses cluttered the landscape.

Among the iconic spots featured in the film is Spiritus Pizza, where Bourdain's love interest, Nancy Putkoski, worked during her summer break. Harrington revealed that the real Nancy had indeed worked at Spiritus Pizza, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the film. In a charming anecdote, he shared that Bourdain would often sleep atop the walk-in cooler after befriending the owner.

Other notable locations include the Lobster Pot and The Flagship restaurant, where Bourdain began his culinary career. Harrington also expressed a fondness for Gina's By the Sea, a restaurant that holds personal significance for him as a local. "It just screamed Cape Cod," he remarked, noting the challenges of shooting in a smaller kitchen but ultimately finding the intimacy of the space to be a perfect fit for the film's atmosphere.

Harrington fondly recalled his interactions with local business owners, many of whom became friends throughout the filming process. Their cooperation and shared memories of Cape Cod enriched the filming experience. "That’s why I’ll always have such great memories of this job," he reflected.

As 'Tony' unfolds the narrative of a young man's journey towards fame, it simultaneously celebrates the vibrant culture and artistic spirit of Cape Cod, a fitting backdrop for a story rooted in personal growth and culinary passion.
