A devastating helicopter crash in northern Kenya has resulted in the deaths of all seven individuals aboard, including an Ecuadorian intelligence chief and an American journalist. The accident occurred at 9:13 AM local time on Wednesday while the helicopter was en route from Loisaba Conservancy to Ewaso Nyiro in Samburu County.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation into the incident. David Nkoroi, the police commander for Samburu, confirmed the fatalities but withheld the identities of the victims initially.
Later, Ecuador’s Transport Minister Roberto Luque identified the victims as Michele Sensi-Contugi, Ecuador’s intelligence chief, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan. Luque expressed his sorrow, stating, “Today Michele and Stephany left us too soon.”
Among the deceased was also Jose Alberto Suarez, a prominent journalist with NBCUniversal. The U.S. Department of State confirmed five American citizens were among those lost and is providing assistance to the families.
The helicopter, a Eurocopter EC130 B4, was operated by Lady Lori Helicopters and was carrying guests from the travel company &Beyond. Recovery efforts were complicated by flames at the crash site, with some bodies still trapped in the wreckage.
