Beijing Dumpling Shop Leads the Way in AI Integration

A dumpling shop in Beijing, Jinguyuan, is making waves as a pioneer in the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the food industry. The establishment has introduced a unique AI skill that allows customers to interact with their personal AI agents for menu inquiries, recommendations, or even to join the queue.
Li Bo, the 41-year-old owner of Jinguyuan, developed this innovative feature in April, inspired by the increasing adoption of AI tools for everyday tasks. He envisions a future where AI assistants play an integral role in daily life, from planning meals to managing schedules. "Science and technology are a primary productive force," Li remarked, quoting Deng Xiaoping, highlighting his belief in embracing advancements.
Unlike many regions where AI adoption is met with skepticism and fear of job displacement, Chinese consumers are notably enthusiastic. A 2025 Ipsos survey ranked China as having the highest excitement for AI among 30 countries surveyed. Despite some concerns about AI's implications, there is a palpable eagerness to integrate these technologies into daily life.
Li, who holds a master’s degree in telecommunications engineering, initially explored various careers before opening Jinguyuan, catering to students and tech workers. His commitment to innovation extends beyond the AI skill; he also created a website to track queue status at his two locations, utilizing Alibaba's coding tools.
While Li acknowledges that the AI skill may attract more media attention than actual usage, he sees himself as a role model for AI adoption. He stated, "Someone needs to start using it, even when it’s not that good," drawing parallels to the early skepticism surrounding steam engines.
