Bihailou Art Village: A Vertical Community in Shenzhen

In a bold architectural endeavor, MVRDV has transformed a commercial complex in Shenzhen's Shatoujiao district into the vibrant Bihailou Art Village, a dynamic vertical neighborhood that blends culture and commerce.

The 6,500-square-meter project stands out with its colorful, stacked volumes, creating a lively three-dimensional village-like atmosphere. Each distinct structure within the complex serves a unique purpose—retail, dining, cultural spaces, and more—encouraging interaction and public life.

Inspired by MVRDV's Vertical Village concept from 2011, the design aims to address the challenges of urban density while preserving the individuality of each space. Instead of a monotonous commercial block, Bihailou consists of various shapes and colors that echo the surrounding environment, including the former Bihailou restaurant that once occupied the site.

Key to the design is the flexible use of space; the performance theater, for instance, features a double-height volume and retractable seating, allowing it to function as an exhibition area as needed. The architecture connects the interior and exterior, with a floor-to-ceiling opening linking the theater to a nearby plaza.

Movement through the building is intentional and interactive. A network of stairs, ramps, and walkways encourages exploration, making circulation a part of the experience rather than a mere passageway. Each function enjoys its own entry point, allowing shops, restaurants, and other facilities to operate independently, extending the building's activity beyond standard hours.

At ground level, the design continues to promote public engagement. Projecting volumes create shaded areas, blending the architecture seamlessly with the existing plaza, and eliminating rigid boundaries between them. The result is a structure that invites community interaction while showcasing a colorful urban presence from afar.

Ultimately, Bihailou Art Village exemplifies how urban growth can embrace diversity and informal public spaces, suggesting that even in densely populated cities, there is room for a sense of community and vibrant public life.
