Tragedy struck the sporting world as former boxing champion Zolani "Last Born" Tete was shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane, South Africa, at the age of 38. The incident occurred when Tete was returning home, and two assailants in balaclavas emerged from a vehicle to open fire.
South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed shock over the violent act, stating, "I will not speculate about who did this or why." The brutal murder has reignited discussions about the persistent high rates of violent crime in South Africa.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane condemned the killing, highlighting Tete's contributions to the region's pride in boxing. A spokesperson for the premier urged law enforcement to investigate thoroughly and called for public assistance in gathering information.
In addition to Tete, a 27-year-old woman accompanying him sustained injuries during the attack and has since been hospitalized. Tete, a celebrated athlete known for his impressive career, including a record-setting 11-second knockout in 2017, had recently returned from a four-year suspension due to a doping violation.
