Breakthrough in Melanoma Treatment: Personalized mRNA Therapy Achieves Phase 3 Success

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

In a groundbreaking development, Merck and Moderna announced that their personalized mRNA therapy, intismeran autogene, successfully met its endpoints in a phase 3 trial for melanoma patients. This marks the first time an mRNA-based cancer treatment has achieved positive results at this advanced stage.

The INTerpath-001 study involved 1,137 participants with completely resected stage IIB to IV melanoma and no prior systemic treatment. Patients were divided into two groups: one received intismeran alongside Merck's pembrolizumab, known as Keytruda, while the other was treated with pembrolizumab alone. The trial demonstrated significant improvements in both recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival.

Although the specific benefits were not disclosed, the companies described the outcomes as "statistically significant and clinically meaningful." Full data will be presented at an upcoming medical conference, and both firms are preparing to engage with regulators regarding approval. Meanwhile, Moderna's stock surged over 90%, reflecting investor optimism about this innovative therapy.
