Brothers Rescued After Bear Encounter in Wyoming Wilderness

On August 25, two brothers found themselves in a precarious situation while exploring the remote Thorofare Valley in Wyoming, necessitating a backcountry rescue.

The men, both in their 30s, stumbled into Hawk’s Rest Wilderness Camp disoriented and low on supplies. Anthony Stevens, chief advisor for Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR), reported that the men were dehydrated and appeared frightened, especially after an encounter with a bear.

Although details about the bear interaction remain unclear, Stevens noted that the brothers used one of their bear spray cans and sustained no injuries from the animal. Fortunately, the camp staff provided them with food and water while they awaited rescue.

Given the remoteness of the area—over 20 miles from the nearest road—their discovery was timely. Initially fearing a severe bear attack, TCSAR chose to wait until daylight to airlift the men due to the challenging terrain, eventually flying them to safety without any need for medical assistance.

This incident adds to a string of bear-related encounters in the region this summer, underscoring the importance of caution when navigating such wild landscapes.
