Tragic Wildfires Claim Lives in Algeria Amid Extreme Heatwave

Wildfires in northern Algeria have resulted in the death of twelve individuals and left dozens injured, as the region endures a severe heatwave. Interior Minister Said Sayoud confirmed that the blazes have led to 54 injuries, with six people in critical condition.

The fatalities spanned several provinces: five in Jijel, four in Bejaia, and three in Tizi Ouzou. Sayoud, along with Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene, visited Bejaia to monitor the response efforts.

On Wednesday, Algeria's civil protection services reported over 150 active wildfires, with 36 reported in Bejaia alone. Families have been evacuated from areas threatened by flames, as images show residents seeking refuge amidst smoke. This summer, Algeria has faced numerous wildfires, exacerbated by drought and climate change, claiming lives and devastating landscapes.
