Burnham Unfazed by Hoax Message Exchange with Trump Aide Impersonator

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister, has confidently stated that he feels no embarrassment over a recent incident involving a hoax exchange with an individual posing as Donald Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles. Burnham noticed something amiss during the exchange and promptly reported the messages, emphasizing that he acted appropriately.

Speaking at the Wolverhampton bus station, Burnham remarked, “No, I’m not [embarrassed], because there was a minimal exchange, nothing of consequence, and actually, quickly I realised that this needed to be reported.” He reassured that he handled the situation correctly and acknowledged the challenges faced by politicians regarding such pressures.

The incident, first reported by Politico, raised alarms at the British embassy in Washington, leading to discussions with White House officials. Reports suggest that Wiles' phone had been previously hacked, but U.S. authorities clarified that Burnham's case was unrelated. The FBI had also investigated previous impersonations related to Wiles.

In a light-hearted response, Trump seemed unaware of the incident, attributing it to a “miscommunication.” Burnham's experience echoes past incidents where other British officials were similarly targeted, including a hoax call involving Lord David Cameron.
