Buss Siblings Eye Exit from Lakers Amid Ownership Turmoil

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

The ongoing discord among Jerry Buss's children over the family's Lakers stake has taken a dramatic turn. Since their father’s death in 2013, the six siblings have been divided, with eldest brothers Johnny and Jim advocating for a sale, while Jeanie, the team's governor, and sister Janie preferred to retain control. Meanwhile, younger brothers Joey and Jesse aimed to eventually lead the franchise.

Recent developments have shaken the family dynamics further. Jeanie initiated the sale of a majority stake to Mark Walter, who is currently under federal investigation, and that stake has since changed hands to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner. With the Buss family now holding just 17.8% of the team, they see a new opportunity to divest their remaining shares.

In a statement, the family expressed their love for the Lakers while acknowledging the need to exit gracefully.
