Buzzing into Prosperity: Beekeeping's Role in Rural Economic Growth

In the Eastern Cape, a new wave of economic transformation is taking flight, thanks to beekeeping. Dr. Owetu Zamisa, a recent graduate from the University of Fort Hare, has shed light on how this often-overlooked sector can significantly boost household incomes and promote rural development.

Zamisa, the youngest PhD recipient at the university, dedicated her research to understanding the intersection between beekeeping and economic enhancement. Her findings revealed that not only does beekeeping hold great promise, especially in underprivileged areas, but it also empowers rural women by increasing their income potential through sustainable practices.

Throughout her study, Zamisa engaged with 300 small-scale beekeepers to identify key factors for success, such as education, cooperative membership, and market access. “There is money in beekeeping,” she asserted, emphasizing the importance of formal market connections.

Additionally, her work explored the rising interest among rural women in wild honey hunting, traditionally a male-dominated activity. Her research indicates that this shift could enhance food security and diversify diets in these communities. Zamisa advocates for sustainable harvesting techniques and improved access to resources to support this emerging trend.

Her journey at the University of Fort Hare began ten years ago, and her achievements inspire not only her family—who celebrate her as a trailblazer—but also those she hopes to mentor in the future. “I want to show students like me that they can achieve their dreams,” she remarked.
