Cairngorms Wildfire Contained After Prolonged Battle

After nearly five weeks of relentless effort, firefighters have successfully contained the wildfire in the Cairngorms National Park, allowing the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) to officially leave the scene.
The blaze, which ignited on July 15 near Aviemore, has scorched approximately 25 square kilometers of land, prompting the deployment of over 500 firefighters. On Monday, the SFRS handed over the affected areas around RSPB Abernethy Nature Reserve to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
While the firefighters have departed, SFRS deputy assistant chief officer William Pollard cautioned the public to stay vigilant. Significant disruptions have occurred due to firefighting operations, and some areas remain unsafe due to unstable ground and the potential for falling trees. Although local businesses are reopening, certain locations will remain closed as safety assessments continue.
An RSPB spokesperson acknowledged the progress but indicated that it may take time before the nature reserve can safely welcome visitors again, emphasizing the ongoing risks in the area.
