Can Smart Glasses Transform Your Movie-Watching Experience?

As a self-proclaimed film enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for innovative ways to enjoy movies. Enter XREAL's a01 smart glasses, which I received earlier this year. Marketed as a versatile gadget for both gaming and streaming, the a01 piqued my interest, particularly for its film-watching capabilities.

These glasses, priced at around $300, are not your typical augmented reality spectacles. Lacking an internal battery, they require a USB-C connection to a device to function, essentially acting as a portable external monitor. I plugged them into my laptop and settled in to watch David Lynch's "Wild at Heart." The results were visually impressive, thanks to the dual mini OLED panels delivering 1080p resolution and vibrant colors. It creates the illusion of a home projector or even a drive-in movie experience in a dark room.

However, the practicality of using the a01 for movie-watching raises some eyebrows. Why wear these glasses to watch a film that’s playing just a foot away on my laptop? XREAL claims that these glasses create a more immersive experience, equivalent to viewing a 147-inch screen. Yet, the redundancy of having two screens so close together makes one question the device's true utility.

As a potential second monitor, the a01 struggles. The glasses predominantly project their content with little room for multitasking on your laptop. Additionally, connecting to a phone is an option, but my older iPhone required an adapter for compatibility, illustrating another layer of inconvenience. While this connection allows for greater mobility—picture watching a movie on a train—you're still tethered to an active phone screen, which feels unnecessary.

For those looking for a more seamless streaming experience, XREAL offers the Beam Pro, a mini-tablet that serves as a dedicated streaming hub for an additional $200. This could alleviate some of the redundancy issues, allowing users to download and watch content without relying on another device.

There are also some physical concerns. The a01 tends to heat up after prolonged use, creating an uncomfortable sensation on the face, a common issue with XR devices. Despite this, the glasses are relatively lightweight, making them more comfortable than other options I’ve tried.

Looking ahead, XREAL is developing a new model called Project Aura, which promises notable improvements, including native hand tracking and access to the Google Play Store for enhanced interactivity. This could potentially resolve many of the limitations I encountered with the a01.

Ultimately, while the a01 offers a unique glimpse into the future of media consumption, it falls short of providing the optimal experience for serious movie lovers. With large 4K OLED screens dominating the market, traditional viewing methods remain far more satisfying. The novelty of watching films on smart glasses may be appealing, but it's unlikely to rival the comfort of a spacious home screen or the immersive atmosphere of a theater.
