The excitement surrounding humanoid robots is gaining traction, particularly among Chinese automakers eager to tap into a burgeoning market. The innovation led by Tesla's Optimus robot and the impressive feats of Boston Dynamics' Atlas have set a competitive tone within the automotive industry.
This week, Xpeng’s robotics division celebrated a significant milestone, securing over $900 million in funding, marking a historic moment as the largest single-round financing in China’s ‘embodied AI’ sector. This funding round included major players like IDG Capital and Tencent, propelling Xpeng's valuation to over $6.3 billion.
As Chinese automakers pivot towards robotics, Xpeng stands out as a company closely aligned with Tesla's vision. According to Michael Dunne, CEO of Dunne Insights, Xpeng's founder He Xiaopeng is making bold moves as profits from traditional vehicles dwindle. He sees the future in humanoid robots, going so far as to invest around $100 million of his own money into the robotics unit.
In addition to Xpeng, other companies like Chery Automobile and BYD are also stepping into the humanoid robot arena. Chery is reportedly gearing up for an IPO for its robotics division, while BYD has introduced its robot, Xiao Di. Many automotive firms, including Hyundai and Rivian, are exploring similar innovations, aiming for commercial deployment of humanoid robots in various capacities.
