Canada Responds to US Tariffs with Equal Measures

By Editor • August 22, 2026 • 1 min read

In a decisive move following the imposition of significant US tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will respond in kind, matching the tariffs "dollar for dollar" to safeguard local workers and businesses. This announcement comes after a series of fruitless negotiations that ended without an agreement, resulting in new 50-percent duties affecting approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed that Canada had declined to finalize the trade deal that had been tentatively agreed upon earlier in the week, despite offers from the US for tariff reductions in key sectors like steel, aluminum, and autos. Carney criticized the last-minute changes proposed by the US, labeling them as "unfair" and detrimental to any potential agreement.

As tensions escalated, the US had expressed frustration over Canada's retaliatory measures, particularly the exclusion of US alcohol and wine from Canadian liquor stores, which the White House deemed discriminatory. Negotiations had continued at a rapid pace in Washington, yet Canadian negotiators, led by Dominic LeBlanc, indicated that more discussions were needed to resolve outstanding issues. With the US accounting for roughly 70 percent of Canadian exports, Carney emphasized the necessity for Canada to diversify its trade relationships moving forward.
