Celebrating Bill Blass: Christie’s to Showcase Iconic Fashion and Personal Letters

Christie’s is set to host an exhibition and auction titled “Bill Blass: American Elegance,” in tribute to the legendary designer whose work epitomized American fashion. Running from September 9 to 23, the event will feature 129 items, including vintage garments, fashion sketches, and personal correspondence that illuminate Blass’s significant influence on 20th-century style.

Blass, who passed away in 2002 at age 79, dressed numerous high-profile women, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Nancy Reagan, and Barbara Bush. A preview of select items will be displayed at Christie’s New York from September 8 to 13, followed by a full exhibition at Blass’s former townhouse from September 18 to 22.

Other correspondences include messages from fashion luminaries such as Ralph Lauren and Diane Vreeland. Christie’s anticipates that the auction will raise over $150,000, with proceeds benefiting the Bill Blass company.

Peter Som, a former creative director for Bill Blass and a consultant for the auction, emphasized the designer's impact during a transformative era for American women. He noted that Blass addressed the evolving needs of women who were transitioning from home to the workplace, shaping their fashion choices in the process. The auction will feature standout pieces like a plaid suit famously worn by Nancy Reagan and a gown that Beyoncé Knowles-Carter showcased for InStyle magazine.
