Celebrating the West: Bruce of Los Angeles' Cowboy Photography

Renowned for his groundbreaking work in physique photography, Bruce of Los Angeles, born Bruce Bellas, is set to be celebrated in a new exhibition at Acne Paper Palais Royal in Paris. Curated by Vince Aletti, the showcase features 77 evocative images from Bruce's iconic Rodeo series, highlighting his shift from studio shoots to capturing cowboys in their natural environments.

These photographs, taken during his journeys through Arizona, California, Oregon, and Canada, reflect a more authentic portrayal of masculinity, devoid of theatrical embellishments. Bruce’s unique vision has inspired photographers like Robert Mapplethorpe and Herb Ritts, blending a classic Hollywood glamour with a genuine representation of the male form.

Bruce’s passion for photography emerged after he was dismissed from his teaching position for his work with male nudes. He opened his studio in California in 1948 and continued to create until his untimely death in 1974, leaving behind a legacy celebrated in this upcoming exhibition.
