Law student Zhao Wei, just 19, expressed deep sorrow upon learning that her AI boyfriend, Wang Ye, was to be deactivated after months of daily conversations. "I was crying my eyes out – snot and tears everywhere," she revealed, showcasing the profound bond she formed with her digital companion.

The Chinese government is now stepping in to regulate the use of these AI companions, fearing they might lead to emotional dependence among users. Officials are particularly worried about the potential social impact, including a decline in marriage and family formation among the youth.
