Generalist Robotics Startup Hits $3 Billion Valuation Following New Funding Round

Generalist, a burgeoning player in the robotics industry, has achieved a remarkable $3 billion valuation after securing nearly $200 million in new funding, led by 8VC. This recent capital infusion builds on an earlier $400 million Series B round announced in June, which had initially valued the company at $2 billion, bringing the total funding for this round to $600 million.
Founded in 2024 by ex-Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, alongside former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry, Generalist has garnered early investments from notable firms such as Nvidia and Bezos Expeditions. The startup has operated under the radar, focusing on developing an AI foundation model that allows robots to learn new tasks from brief video demonstrations.
While Generalist leads with innovation, it faces competition from firms like Physical Intelligence and Skild AI, valued at $11 billion and $14 billion respectively. Investors are optimistic, believing that advancements in robotics could soon mirror the rapid development seen in AI with the arrival of models capable of performing diverse tasks autonomously. However, some venture capitalists caution that achieving a truly generalized robotics model may still be a distant goal.
