Chinese Artist Gao Zhen Sentenced to Three Years for Satirical Art

Gao Zhen, a prominent Chinese artist and member of the Gao Brothers duo, has been sentenced to three years in prison for creating satirical works that are deemed disrespectful to national heroes, including former leader Mao Zedong.

The Sanhei People's Court in Hebei province delivered the ruling on Tuesday, following Gao's arrest during a family visit in August 2024. His wife, Zhao Yaliang, confirmed the verdict, which stems from artworks like the controversial statue titled 'Mao’s Guilt,' portraying Mao in a kneeling position of remorse, and the 'Miss Mao' caricature series.

Shane Yi from Chinese Human Rights Defenders criticized the sentence as a blatant infringement on freedom of expression, stating that Gao intends to appeal. Notably, the artworks were created before the controversial law under which he was convicted was enacted.

Amnesty International condemned the ruling, labeling it a deterrent to artistic freedom and highlighting the government's hardline stance on independent expression, particularly following the 2018 law that restricts criticism of revered figures. Zhao expressed her distress over the verdict, hoping for a reunion with her husband and a return to their life in the U.S.
