In an unexpected move, CIA Director John Ratcliffe flew to Moscow on Tuesday aboard a military aircraft, as reported by CBS. This visit marks a rare occasion for high-level discussions between American and Russian officials, with details surrounding the trip remaining unconfirmed by either government.
Flight tracking confirmed that a C-17 transport plane departed from Riga, Latvia, landing in Moscow around 07:04 GMT before returning later that day. Social media footage captured the plane's approach to Vnukovo International Airport and also showed a diplomatic motorcade in the city.
Experts suggest that Ratcliffe's visit could be aimed at addressing recent tensions, possibly linked to drone activities in Germany. John Foreman, a former British military attaché in Moscow, noted the unusual nature of such an unannounced trip, indicating that it might relate to “escalation management” or discussions about US detainees in Russia. Ratcliffe has previously engaged in negotiations for the release of American citizens held in Russia, including journalist Evan Gershkovich.
