Colombo Court to Announce Verdict in Easter Sunday Bombings Case

The Colombo High Court is gearing up to deliver its verdict in the high-profile case regarding the Easter Sunday bombings, scheduled for September 22. This tragic event in 2019 claimed the lives of 279 individuals, including 45 foreigners, following a series of coordinated suicide attacks targeting churches and luxury hotels across Sri Lanka.
A total of 25 individuals were charged in connection with the bombings, with 24 being indicted after one suspect's death. The extensive trial spanned 547 days and included testimony from 2,309 witnesses. The attacks were carried out by the local jihadi group NTJ, with Mohammadu Ebrahim Mohammdu Naufer identified as the primary suspect.
Additionally, former police chief Pujith Jayasundera and Hemasiri Fernando, former secretary to the Ministry of Defence, received death sentences for failing to act on intelligence that could have thwarted the attacks. Former President Maithripala Sirisena was also ordered to pay compensation to victims' families.
