Conquering Humidity: Strategies for Running in Muggy Conditions

By Editor • August 27, 2026 • 1 min read

A recent experience highlighted the challenges of running in high humidity. On a seemingly pleasant July morning in New York City, the 67-degree weather quickly turned oppressive as humidity set in, making even a short jog feel like an arduous task.

The struggle led to a search for answers, and experts weighed in on why humidity can transform an easy run into a strenuous workout. According to John Gallucci Jr., DPT, and CEO of JAG Physical Therapy, the body’s ability to regulate temperature is compromised in humid conditions. When we sweat, the evaporation process cools us down. However, in humid air, that moisture makes it harder for sweat to evaporate, leading to increased body heat and a faster rise in core temperature.

This physiological response forces the cardiovascular system to work overtime, which results in a higher heart rate and quicker fatigue. As Gallucci explains, what should feel like a comfortable run can become significantly more challenging under high humidity.

To mitigate the effects of humidity on performance, adjustments in pace are necessary. Chris Minson, a professor at the University of Oregon, advises that runners slow down by at least ten seconds per mile when humidity levels exceed 75 percent. Starting conservatively is crucial, as it is challenging to recover once overheated.

However, not all hope is lost for runners facing humid conditions. Gallucci notes that the body can adapt over time. By gradually training in humid environments, runners can enhance their heat tolerance within a few weeks. Minson echoes this sentiment, advocating for a balanced approach to training in heat and humidity to improve overall performance.
