Former football star Nicky Winmar has been sentenced to six months in jail following a violent assault on a woman in Cohuna, Victoria, last year. Winmar, 60, was convicted on three counts of assault after he violently smashed the victim's head against a door and dragged her by her hair.
During the recent plea hearing, the unnamed victim described the psychological toll of the attack, stating it left her feeling like a "shadow of the person" she once was. Magistrate Trieu Huynh expressed concern over Winmar's history of alcohol-related violence and the unprovoked nature of his actions.
Winmar has been removed from the Australian Football Hall of Fame, and a statue commemorating his stand against racism has also been taken down.
