From Surfboards to Lighting: Nick Sheridan's Creative Odyssey

Nick Sheridan, co-founder and design director of Cerno, has blended his love for craftsmanship and design into a successful career in lighting. Growing up in Laguna Beach, California, he was influenced by both his father, a general contractor, and the vibrant creative community around him. "My dad was a general contractor, and he shared his love of design with me," he recalls, which sparked his interest in architecture and the arts.

After earning his architecture degree from Cal Poly Pomona, where he was inspired by modernist icons like Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, Sheridan teamed up with childhood friends Bret Englander and Daniel Wacholder to establish Cerno in 2009. The trio's shared history of entrepreneurship in their youth led to the natural evolution of their lighting design brand, which now features an array of LED pendants, sconces, and chandeliers.

At Cerno, Sheridan emphasizes the use of natural materials, such as solid wood and brushed metal, to achieve a contemporary aesthetic. Reflecting on his creative process, he mentions the thrill of bringing designs to life: "Nothing beats that feeling you get when you bring something new to life. It's a visceral high when you complete a design and get to experience it." This passion for creation has led to numerous innovative projects, including the Amicus 21 pendant, inspired by his travels in Morocco.

His trip to Morocco in 2016 left a lasting impression on Sheridan, as he marveled at the intricate designs of local architecture and lighting. The beautifully crafted perforated metal lanterns and vibrant colors ignited his imagination, leading to the creation of the Amicus fixture. "I saw stunning spaces illuminated by intricate perforated metal lanterns with beautiful geometric patterns," he reflects, showcasing how travel continues to influence his design philosophy.

Rooted in Laguna Canyon, Cerno was established in a small workshop surrounded by fellow artisans, fostering an environment of creativity. Sheridan believes that this background has been pivotal in shaping their design ethos. He states, "Living in the canyon as an adult today feels like it is a retreat into the wilderness. Being nestled in the hills helps me stay centered and grounded."

Among his cherished possessions is a vintage 1968 VW Beetle, which he describes as a source of joy and inspiration. Although it doesn’t see as much road time now due to family commitments, it remains a beloved reminder of simplicity and the lessons in design that it imparts. Sheridan fondly recalls a previous residence with a swimming pool right outside his apartment door, a luxury that provided him with daily relaxation and inspiration related to water.

Among Cerno's standout creations are the Mica accent pendant, which features an organic symmetry, and the Lenis fixture, born from a desire to explore new forms through the bending of wood. The Locus chandelier, a collaboration with Siemon & Salazar, represents a blend of Cerno's signature wood with fresh glass elements, symbolizing the strength and fragility of their design journey. Each piece tells a story, showcasing Sheridan's commitment to originality and craftsmanship.
