Consuelo Castiglioni's Enchanting Formentera Retreat

Renowned for her unique take on fashion, Consuelo Castiglioni, co-founder of the Marni label, has extended her creative vision beyond the catwalk to the sun-drenched shores of Formentera. Castiglioni describes her style as 'hippie chic,' and it is this aesthetic that has transformed Marni into a coveted brand among bohemian trendsetters.

Since launching Marni with her husband Gianni, the couple has captivated fashion enthusiasts with collections that blend ethnic motifs and vintage influences, often reminiscent of charming wallpaper patterns from the 1920s or classic china designs from the 1950s. They've also revolutionized the use of fur in fashion, making it an accessible, colorful accessory that resonates with contemporary tastes.

The couple’s passionate love for travel has shaped their lives and their home in Formentera. Their journey to this picturesque island began in 1996, when Consuelo was so taken by the quaint charm of its tiny port that she jokingly exclaimed, 'Now we are in Africa!' The couple soon yearned for their own slice of paradise on this rugged Mediterranean isle, known for its fiercely proud locals.

Securing a property on Formentera proved challenging, as the islanders held a deep-seated reluctance to part with their land. Gianni, however, was undeterred, cycling across the island and making numerous inquiries until he finally convinced a local farmer to sell them a field. The land, bordered by traditional orange stone walls and dotted with ancient fig trees, offers breathtaking views of the iconic Es Vedrà rock.

With the opportunity to design their dream home, the Castiglionis opted for a design that embraced the island's natural elements rather than conforming to conventional local architecture. 'Gianni wanted something really open—to be able to see through the house,' Consuelo recalls. They sought a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, with expansive areas flooded with light, reminiscent of a 'Flintstones' style.

Inspired by a trip to Yemen, where adobe cities rise dramatically from the desert, Consuelo's vision materialized into a stunning residence featuring a striking staircase and open living areas. The home is designed to integrate seamlessly with its surroundings, with deep loggias shaded by palm fronds, and vibrant bougainvillea adding bursts of color.

The couple's eclectic taste is evident in the furnishings, collected from their extensive travels. Consuelo delights in sourcing unique items, from Moroccan carpets to Turkish textiles, each piece telling a story of far-off lands. Their home is not just a refuge but a canvas for Consuelo's creativity, where every corner sparks inspiration for her Marni collections.

In the heart of this artistic haven, Consuelo and Gianni’s children also contribute their flair.
