Cultural Misstep: American Couple Faces Venetian Law Over Shirtless Running

During a recent trip to Venice, an American couple faced an unexpected cultural and legal faux pas while enjoying a morning run. Julia Latoff and her partner, endurance athlete Mike Naccarella, thought they were simply staying active, but instead found themselves on the wrong side of local regulations.
Latoff, who spoke with The New York Post, explained that they typically run to explore new cities. They planned their jog early to avoid crowds, but quickly became aware of the disapproving stares from locals. "Within the first 5 to 10 minutes, Mike noticed people looking at him and giving us glances. We knew something was off," she recounted.
The couple's trouble stemmed from Naccarella's decision to run without a shirt, a choice he thought was harmless after seeing others do the same in Florence. However, a quick online search revealed that this practice is illegal in Venice, with fines reaching up to €250. This law, enacted in 2018, aims to respect the city's rich cultural and religious heritage.
Realizing their mistake, the couple halted their run, but with two miles left to their accommodation, Naccarella opted not to jog back shirtless. His sister's fiancé came to the rescue, purchasing a shirt featuring the famous "Creation of Adam" artwork. The couple later shared their experience on social media, hoping to remind travelers to be mindful of local customs.
