Thomas River: Reviving History in South Africa's Eastern Cape

In the heart of South Africa's Eastern Cape lies Thomas River, a quaint village where the echoes of its rich history resonate through time. Once a bustling railway settlement, this small community is reclaiming its past, transforming itself into a heritage site that invites visitors to step back into another era.

A Name Steeped in Tragedy

The origins of Thomas River's name are rooted in sorrow. In 1801, missionary Jan van der Kemp witnessed the fatal arrow strike of Thomas Bentley, an English deserter, as he crossed the river. This tragic event led to the river being named in Bentley's honor, marking the beginning of the village's storied history.

The Railway's Impact

The arrival of the railway in the late 1870s marked a significant turning point for Thomas River. With the establishment of a railway station, the village became a vital link between East London and the interior, fostering a flourishing agricultural community. Surrounding the station were four stone military watchtowers, remnants of a time when protection was necessary during frontier conflicts. The infrastructure allowed for the transport of goods and people, facilitating trade and connection for the remote farming community.

A Revival of Historical Significance

After years of decline following the railway's departure in 1948, Thomas River found new life thanks to Jeff and Ann Sansom, who began restoring the village in 2002. Their efforts have transformed old buildings into museums, showcasing everyday items that tell the story of a simpler time. Visitors can now explore a former blacksmith's workshop filled with vintage cars, dine at the Ramble Restaurant and Museum Pub, or read in a converted library filled with relics of the past.

The village also offers accommodations, allowing guests to immerse themselves in its historical charm while enjoying the surrounding 31,000 hectares of the Thomas River Conservancy, perfect for outdoor activities.
