Indonesia Reels from 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake, 47 Confirmed Dead

A devastating earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's island of Flores early Saturday, resulting in at least 47 fatalities, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

The tremor, which struck just before 5:00 AM local time (22:00 GMT Friday), had a shallow depth of 15 kilometers, contributing to its destructive impact. In the aftermath, hundreds of buildings were damaged, and the region has experienced multiple aftershocks, including a notable 6.4 magnitude quake in North Sumatra.

Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena reported that many victims were killed while sleeping, crushed by falling debris. Eyewitness accounts describe chaotic scenes, with residents fleeing inland following an initial tsunami warning that was later lifted.

Arnold Welianto, a Talibura resident, recounted the terrifying moments when the quake jolted him awake. "I was startled awake and immediately went to my child's room," he said, adding that many locals had already sought refuge in the hills.

In addition to the loss of life, the quake has left significant infrastructure damage, with more than 150 houses and numerous public facilities severely affected. The BNPB confirmed that Manggarai province was among the hardest-hit areas, with fatalities reported across several provinces.

Efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the destruction in this remote region, with aid being dispatched to support those impacted. Officials are urging residents to remain calm and avoid damaged structures as aftershocks continue to pose a threat.
