Deadly Drone Strike Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Raises Alarms

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

A recent drone attack near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southeastern Ukraine has resulted in one death and 17 injuries, primarily among plant staff, as reported by Russian officials. The drone, allegedly launched by Ukraine, struck a bus stop area, marking a serious incident for the facility, which has been under Russian control since March 2022.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the attack, emphasizing that while no nuclear safety issues were reported, the situation poses significant risks. The agency urged military leaders involved to cease actions that endanger nuclear safety.

Despite all six reactors being offline since Russia's seizure, the facility remains critical to Ukraine’s energy supply. The attack occurred just before IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi's planned visit to assess safety protocols, leaving uncertainty about the visit's continuation.
