Dive Into ‘Pastel,’ Cj Hendry’s Million-Bead Installation at Salon 94 Design

Cj Hendry’s latest exhibition, titled Pastel, showcases approximately one million pastel beads and is on display at Salon 94 Design on New York’s Upper East Side from August 6-16. The installation invites visitors to interact with a large pit of plastic beads, reminiscent of a swimming pool.

The exhibit was inspired by Hendry’s experience at Space Club, a children’s play area in Brooklyn, where she observed both children and adults engaging with beads. To enhance accessibility, she expanded the concept into a 20 by 30 feet pit, over two feet deep.

Visitors can wade through the beads, create jewelry, or collect beads as souvenirs, priced at $1 each or $50 for a canister of 75. Hendry humorously notes, “I bet Salon 94 has never sold art for a dollar.”

Hendry, who has nearly a million Instagram followers, believes that Pastel bridges her experimental art with a traditional gallery setting, stating, “This exhibition creates a bridge between the world I’ve built and a more traditional gallery context.”

In addition to the bead pit, attendees can view Hendry’s photorealistic drawings and sculptures on the gallery’s upper floor. The exhibition runs until August 16, with collectible edition prints available for purchase on cjhendrystudio.com starting August 9 at 7 p.m. ET.
