Dollywood: Dolly Parton's Legacy Transformed into a Community Beacon

By Editor • August 28, 2026 • 2 min read

The recent passing of country music icon Dolly Parton on August 25 has left a profound impact, but her legacy continues to thrive through Dollywood, a theme park that has become a cornerstone of community development in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Eugene Naughton, president of Dollywood Parks & Resorts, emphasized this sentiment in a heartfelt social media tribute, stating, "She’s alive and well here. We are all gonna keep her alive here." This dedication underscores how Parton’s vision transformed the region into more than just a tourist destination.

Since opening in 1986, Dollywood has evolved into the most popular theme park in the U.S., with over 10,000 visitors daily. What began as a modest venture has blossomed into a significant economic engine for the area, employing around 4,000 people and generating an estimated 23,000 jobs in the region.

Located in the scenic backdrop of the Great Smoky Mountains, Dollywood spans 165 acres, blending attractions that reflect both Parton’s flair and the rich cultural heritage of East Tennessee. The park features a mix of unique structures, including a rustic farmhouse-style theater and a replica of Parton’s childhood home, showcasing local architecture and traditions.

David Kooris, executive director of the Connecticut Municipal Development Authority, noted that Dollywood's success lies in its deep connection to regional identity. He stated, "The strongest development begins with the history, culture, and physical assets already present in a place." This philosophy is crucial for urban planning and revitalization.

Beyond entertainment, Dollywood prioritizes its workforce, offering on-site housing, health services, and education benefits, which experts say are vital to its success. Moses Gates from the Regional Plan Association remarked on the holistic approach to workforce development that the park embodies.

As Tennessee’s tourism industry continues to flourish, generating $31.6 billion in direct spending in 2024, Dollywood stands as a testament to Parton’s enduring influence. Naughton encapsulated the park's spirit, urging, "Don’t be afraid to care more about others, because that’s exactly what she’d want us to do. The show must go on."
