Elon Musk's X Faces Legal Setback Over New York Hate Speech Law

A federal judge has ruled against Elon Musk's X, formerly Twitter, dismissing its lawsuit aimed at overturning New York's Stop Hiding Hate Act. This law mandates social media companies to disclose how they manage hate speech and misinformation on their platforms.

U.S. District Judge John Cronan found that the law does not infringe on the First Amendment, stating that the requirement for X to share factual information about its content moderation practices is justified. He compared the disclosure of content moderation policies to businesses providing calorie information on menu items.

The law, enacted in December 2024 by Governor Kathy Hochul, targets social media companies with annual revenues exceeding $100 million, imposing significant fines for non-compliance. The New York Attorney General's office defended the law, emphasizing its role in helping consumers make informed decisions about social media usage.
