Met Police Introduces High-Speed E-Bikes to Combat Phone Thefts

The Metropolitan Police in London has unveiled a fleet of 20 high-speed e-bikes, designed to enhance their ability to pursue suspects and tackle mobile phone thefts effectively. Capable of reaching speeds up to 50 miles per hour, these bikes can even navigate off-road terrains and ascend stairs, marking a significant upgrade in police patrol capabilities.
Recent statistics reveal a drop in mobile phone thefts, with incidents decreasing from approximately 68,000 to 54,000 in the year leading up to May. However, the rate of positive outcomes—cases resulting in cautions or charges—remains disappointingly below 1%.
Kaya Comer-Schwartz, London’s deputy mayor for policing, emphasized that addressing such crimes necessitates improvements in the broader criminal justice system. Meanwhile, the Met’s deputy assistant commissioner, Louise Puddefoot, is focused on reassuring the public that the police are actively combating crime, despite ongoing discussions about safety in the capital.
