Hui Ka Yan, the founder of the Chinese real estate giant Evergrande Group, has received a life sentence for orchestrating extensive financial fraud, as ruled by the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court on August 20, 2026.
With the company burdened by over $300 billion in debt, this landmark decision comes in the wake of a crackdown by Chinese authorities on excessive borrowing in the property sector that began in 2020. This regulatory move led to a broader downturn in the real estate market and an ongoing economic slump.
Hui, aged 67 and also known as Xu Jiayin, was found guilty of inflating the group’s assets and concealing liabilities, resulting in serious economic repercussions. The court imposed hefty fines on the companies, totaling approximately $2 billion, including 8.82 billion yuan ($1.31 billion) on Evergrande Group and 7 billion yuan ($1.04 billion) on Evergrande Real Estate Group.
The court described the financial misconduct as causing extraordinarily heavy economic losses and noted the severe societal harm inflicted. Alongside Hui, his sons and several senior executives were sentenced for various fraudulent activities, including illegal fundraising and misappropriation of public deposits. In total, over 50 individuals received prison sentences ranging from 22 months to 18 years.
Hui had previously pleaded guilty to charges including fraud and bribery after his arrest. Once celebrated as China’s wealthiest individual, he saw his empire crumble following the company’s default on debts in 2021, which led to the liquidation of its assets. Under investigation, authorities discovered that Evergrande had manipulated financial data, resulting in an overstatement of revenues by about $80 billion.
Born in 1958 into a rural family, Hui's rise from humble beginnings to a significant player in the real estate market is now marred by his conviction, signifying a dramatic fall from grace.
