Empowering Futures: Gold Coast Charity Constructs Tiny Homes for At-Risk Youth

A Gold Coast charity is taking innovative steps to assist at-risk youth by teaching them valuable construction skills while simultaneously addressing housing needs in the community. Everything Suarve (Esuarve) has launched a program that allows participants to build tiny homes, aiming to divert young people from the juvenile justice system and instill a sense of purpose.

Founded in 2023, this initiative targets individuals aged 16 to 24 who are disengaged from education and employment. Joseph Te Puni-Fromont, the driving force behind Esuarve, emphasizes the importance of mental wellbeing before participants engage in hands-on construction. The program begins with two weeks devoted to developing mental and behavioral skills, ensuring that participants are ready to tackle the more technical aspects of construction.

Building Homes and Skills

During the subsequent eight weeks, participants dive into the construction of fully functional tiny homes. The homes arrive waterproofed, allowing participants to focus on adding external cladding and interior fixtures, including kitchens and bathrooms. So far, the initiative has resulted in the construction of 14 tiny homes, with eight currently providing shelter for individuals recovering from eating disorders at Queensland's first recovery village on the Sunshine Coast.

Success Beyond Housing

The impact of Esuarve extends beyond just building homes. Te Puni-Fromont proudly reports that 90% of participants have found employment after completing the program, with a total of 360 young people having benefited since its inception. This success aligns with findings from an Australian-first review that suggests vocational training in construction significantly reduces youth recidivism and addresses skill shortages in the building sector.

As the need for community-driven solutions grows, Esuarve is now seeking a partnership with the state government to expand their tiny home initiative for social and emergency housing. Queensland Housing Minister Sam O'Connor has expressed support for such endeavors, highlighting the importance of creating opportunities for vulnerable individuals.
