New research into a tomb in Egypt's Theban necropolis sheds light on the evolution of burial practices over centuries. A study published in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology reveals a shift from elaborate individual burials to the reuse of tombs, leading to increased density and overlapping remains.
Tomb 209, dating back to the early 25th Dynasty, belonged to a high-ranking official, Nisemro, and faced challenges from flooding. Researchers employed an "integrated archaeothanatological approach" to analyze burial sequences and conditions in Side Chamber 3, providing new insights into ancient funerary customs.
