At the Lodge at Whale Pass, guests are welcomed not by rigid schedules but by the natural rhythm of the Alaskan wilderness. On a recent visit, I was roused from slumber by Kevin Ryter, the lodge owner, who had urgent news: a pod of orcas had been spotted nearby. It was a spontaneous adventure that set the tone for my entire stay.
Located on Prince of Wales Island, this intimate lodge is situated in a serene environment, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and wildlife. Accessed primarily via floatplane from Seattle, the lodge offers an exclusive escape from the bustle of daily life. The experience begins with a thrilling 45-minute flight, where guests can enjoy stunning views of the rugged terrain below.
The Lodge at Whale Pass operates on a unique philosophy: daily plans are crafted collaboratively in the evenings, taking into account guests' desires, weather, and wildlife activity. Kevin and his son Lucas, the general manager, engage guests in discussions about their preferences, ensuring personalized activities such as fishing, wildlife viewing, or hiking.
The lodge’s architecture complements its environment, featuring a long dock that leads to two main buildings. The primary lodge houses cozy guest rooms and common areas that encourage relaxation and social interaction. Guests can unwind by the fireplace, play games, or soak in the hot tub with views of the tranquil waters.
Dining at the lodge is equally flexible, with breakfast available from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM and dinner served in a communal setting. One evening, after an exhilarating fishing trip, I enjoyed a halibut dinner, expertly prepared by the lodge’s chef. The experience of catching and feasting on that fish was a highlight of my stay.
Wildlife excursions are a staple of the lodge experience. On one of my days, we ventured to Anan Creek, a renowned wildlife observatory within Tongass National Forest. Here, I witnessed bears fishing for salmon in a pristine locale, showcasing the region's natural beauty and abundant wildlife.
The Lodge at Whale Pass offers more than just wildlife watching. Guests can engage in a variety of activities such as kayaking, mountain biking, and exploring the rich Indigenous history of the region. On one adventure, we explored tide pools, marveling at the vibrant marine life nestled among the rocks.
