Exploring Boise: A Journey Through Its Colors

Arriving in Boise at 9 PM, I was greeted by the calming sight of a city bathed in a soft evening glow. The June sun lingered on the horizon, casting a serene ambiance over the quiet airport, which felt almost deserted for a state capital. As I made my way toward my hotel, I was struck by the expansive layout of Boise, with few signs of life around closed restaurants and empty streets. However, crossing the Boise River transformed my perception, revealing a vibrant downtown filled with historic architecture and the illuminated Idaho State Capitol.
My mission was clear: to capture the essence of Boise through its colors over the next two days. As I strolled through the city from dawn till dusk, I aimed to identify Boise's distinctive hue palette: the lush green of the riverbanks, the iconic blue of Boise State University, the golden grass of the foothills, the warm copper tones in its architecture, and the hidden touches of purple scattered throughout.
Blue emerged as a prominent feature of Boise's identity, tied closely to Boise State University and its famous blue turf. Yet, I encountered unexpected challenges as renovations disrupted my photographic plans at Albertsons Stadium. I turned to alternative settings, like Boise Whitewater Park, where blue appeared more naturally in the vibrant waters, guiding me toward the next color.
Green, a color I hadn’t anticipated, quickly redefined my understanding of the city. The Boise River Greenbelt, the expansive botanical garden, and the leafy neighborhoods like Hyde Park illuminated Boise's reputation as the 'City of Trees.' Instead of the dry, agricultural landscape I had expected, I found a city alive with parks and greenery, full of people enjoying the outdoors, even at dawn.
Gold, however, was not merely confined to objects but emanated from the landscape during the enchanting golden hours at sunrise and sunset. One of my favorite experiences occurred in Camel's Back Park, where golden grasses glowed against deep blue skies, creating a breathtaking backdrop of vibrant contrasts.
The color copper provided a sense of permanence in Boise's architectural charm. I discovered its warm tones in the iron bridges and the Idaho State Capitol’s dome. The Capitol, with its solemn exterior, revealed a stunning rotunda upon entry, allowing me to capture some of my favorite images of the trip. By the end of my exploration, I had come to associate copper with Boise's rich architectural history and depth.
As I sought the elusive color purple, I found it surprisingly in various settings—flowering shrubs in the Idaho Botanical Garden, colorful street art, and even a whimsical drink crafted by baristas at the local Hyde Perk café. Their playful creation, a vivid purple drink, exemplified Boise's welcoming spirit and creativity.
My attempts to categorize Boise into distinct colors led me to the eclectic Freak Alley, a vibrant street art gallery bursting with an entire spectrum of hues. However, it became clear that Boise's true vibrancy transcended mere colors; it was also reflected in the warmth and kindness of the people I encountered. From friendly locals curious about my photography to those who offered recommendations, I found that the connections I formed enriched my experience far beyond the visual.
When I departed Boise, my camera filled with images that told a vivid story of the city, I couldn't help but reflect on how much I had come to appreciate its unique colors and the community that brought them to life. It left me eager to return, not just with a camera but with the time to explore more deeply into the heart of Boise.
