Exploring Rest Through Art: The PiLLOW Installation Turns Sleeplessness into a Sensory Experience

In a thought-provoking exhibition titled PiLLOW, artist Sitta Chandarawong, known as HOMMES.HOM, invites visitors to engage with the emotional weight of sleeplessness through an immersive installation. Located at the MMAD MunMun Art Destination in Bangkok, the exhibit features 48 pill-shaped pillows, each symbolizing an hour of a 48-hour stretch of insomnia.
Designed to create a nurturing environment, the installation is enveloped in deep blue hues that blur the lines between walls and floor. This monochromatic scheme evokes the stillness of night, encouraging visitors to pause and reflect. The plush, tactile pillows, crafted from various fabrics, offer a contrast to the harshness of pharmaceuticals, transforming the original purpose of sleeping pills into inviting objects for physical interaction.
The centerpiece of the installation is a giant form labeled ‘H169’, a name derived from the artist's initials and room number, which serves as a focal point within the exhibit. This blend of artistic design and conceptual depth encourages a multi-sensory experience, inviting participants to touch, rest, and reclaim their relationship with rest away from medication.
Throughout PiLLOW, viewers are free to explore their own comfort zones, whether by lying down, sitting, or simply reflecting amidst the soft forms. This unique approach frames emotional awareness and the search for peace as integral to the experience of art, making it a powerful commentary on the human condition.
