Instagram Refreshes Brand Identity for the First Time in Ten Years

Instagram has unveiled a significant brand overhaul, marking its first major redesign in a decade. The update was revealed by Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, who shared the new identity via a post, emphasizing the need for a cleaner and more modern look.
The familiar cursive wordmark, unchanged since 2016, now features tighter loops and simplified flourishes, particularly in the letters 's', 'r', and 'g'. Jasmine Probst, Instagram's director of product design, noted that the team explored numerous design directions before returning to the handwritten script, which they believe captures individuality.
In addition to the logo, Instagram introduces an updated brand system that includes a new typeface—Instagram Sans—and two new fonts: Instagram Pen and Instagram Mono. The user interface has also received a refresh, allowing for a more spacious layout while maintaining the signature gradient that has long been a hallmark of the brand.
May Hartono, Meta's director of brand design, stated that the new system aims to highlight community creativity and self-expression. While the camera icon remains unchanged, Instagram has recently showcased alternative designs through a campaign featuring various artists. The response to the redesign has sparked a mix of opinions, with some praising the tidied cursive while others criticize the new look, with particular attention drawn to the letter 'r' resembling a 'z'.
