Falwa Restaurant: A Modern Ode to Arabian Equestrian Legacy

At the heart of Abu Dhabi Royal Equestrian Arts (ADREA), the new Falwa restaurant, crafted by the innovative Dubai studio 4SPACE, redefines the intersection of modern gastronomy and Arabian equestrian culture. Designed for esteemed Emirati chef Faisal Alharmoodi, this 450-square-meter space embodies a contemporary interpretation of regional identity, steering clear of clichéd decor and instead focusing on the dynamic essence of the Arabian horse.
The name "Falwa," which translates to a young female mare, symbolizes grace and fluidity, serving as the foundation for the restaurant's architectural vision. Instead of traditional equestrian motifs, the design team concentrated on the physical attributes of horses, capturing their strength and elegance. A custom dusty-white mineral plaster, reminiscent of Rabdan—the legendary horse of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan—envelops the space, creating a soft, earthy aesthetic that interacts with natural light throughout the day.
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a unique spatial experience where conventional boundaries blur. Walls and ceilings undulate in a sculptural manner, inspired by anatomical movement. Asymmetrical portals punctuate this fluidity, providing ever-changing views within the venue. Linear lighting enhances these contours, acting as a guide through the elegantly designed interior.
Central to the dining area is a striking installation that reimagines a desert gathering place, featuring a metallic framework that expands into a geometric woven canopy. This artistic centerpiece, along with custom curved banquette seating, invites diners to relax and connect with their surroundings.
The meticulous attention to materiality is evident throughout the space, with polished Breccia Aurora marble flooring contrasting the soft plaster walls. Dining tables of rich walnut are grounded by solid white travertine bases, while the bespoke furniture subtly nods to equestrian craftsmanship with saddle-brown leather straps and exposed stitching. Ingenious lighting solutions, employing textile straps to suspend glowing glass orbs, echo the rhythm of reins.
In this seamless landscape of design and dining, 4SPACE’s blend of artistry and engineering showcases the potential of architecture to narrate stories of heritage and identity.
