Xteink E-Readers Now Compatible with Free Ebooks via Libby

Xteink's compact e-readers are stepping into the modern age with the introduction of new firmware that allows access to free ebooks through the Libby app and other platforms. This update comes courtesy of the developers behind CrossPoint Reader, a free firmware option for the X3, X4, and X4 Pro models, which now supports third-party plug-ins that greatly enhance the reading experience.
This new functionality, currently in beta, marks a significant shift for Xteink users who previously faced challenges in sourcing ebooks. Unlike competitors like Kindle or Kobo, which offer extensive online bookstores, Xteink e-readers required users to find DRM-free ebooks independently. However, with the latest CrossPoint Reader firmware, users can now borrow DRM-protected ebooks from OverDrive’s Libby library app and purchase titles from Kobo.
To get started, users must first replace the stock firmware with the CrossPoint Reader. This process involves connecting the e-reader to a computer and flashing the new firmware via a web browser. Once installed, users can access the CrossPoint Reader’s Plugin Store by transferring a few files to the device’s microSD card. Among the available tools, the critical “Protected Content” plug-in enables access to Adobe Digital Editions DRM-protected ebooks.
After setting up, users will need a free ByteBooks account or an old Adobe Digital Editions account. To borrow books from Libby, a library card is required. Although Xteink devices cannot directly download or search for ebooks due to their low-power processors, users can still download protected EPUB files through Libby on another device. The CrossPoint Reader plug-in processes these files, allowing users to read borrowed titles on their e-readers.
The process is notably similar for titles purchased from Kobo, where users can download ACSM files and transfer them to their Xteink devices. Alternatively, users can simplify the process by using the Common Stacks app, which connects directly to Libby and facilitates the transfer of ebooks with ease.
While accessing free ebooks through Libby and Common Stacks enhances the value of Xteink devices, users should be aware that availability may vary by library, with popular titles sometimes requiring a wait. Nevertheless, with this new capability, Xteink e-readers are now a more appealing choice for avid readers.
