Fan Favorites: The Fast Food Items Everyone Wants Back

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 2 min read

The fast food landscape is in a constant state of flux, with chains frequently updating their menus. However, certain beloved items have vanished, leaving a void that many fans are eager to see filled once again. From sweet snacks to savory sides, nostalgia fuels the clamor for these discontinued delicacies.

One of the most sought-after items is Taco Bell's Caramel Apple Empanada, a crispy treat that was first introduced in 2000. It became a staple on the Dollar Cravings menu but was removed in 2019. Although it has made sporadic appearances since, fans can rejoice as it is scheduled to return on August 20 as part of Taco Bell’s Decades menu, albeit for a limited time.

Popeyes aficionados are still mourning the loss of Cajun rice, a dish rich in flavor with rice, ground beef, and a medley of spices. This classic side debuted in 1972 but was removed to streamline offerings, with only a brief comeback during the chain’s 50th anniversary in 2022.

Wendy's Fresh Stuffed Pitas, particularly the Chicken Caesar variant, are another nostalgic favorite. Launched in the 90s, these pitas featured tender chicken and fresh veggies but faded from the menu around the year 2000, leaving fans yearning for their return.

Meanwhile, Burger King once served an Italian Chicken Sandwich that debuted in 1988, featuring a breaded chicken patty topped with marinara and mozzarella. Although it has seen a few revivals over the years, it remains largely absent from the menu.

Fast food salads were once dismissed, but McDonald’s Southwest Salad proved popular until its removal in 2020. Loaded with grilled or crispy chicken, black beans, and a creamy dressing, its absence has not gone unnoticed.

Another Taco Bell item with a loyal following is the Chili Burger, which was rebranded as the Bell Beefer. Despite protests from fans during its discontinuation in the 90s, it has largely faded from memory, aside from a brief return in the 2010s.

Dunkin’ also has its own nostalgia trip with Bagel Twists, particularly the cheddar-topped version that debuted in 2010. Fans still yearn for this convenient breakfast option. Lastly, McDonald’s Jalapeño Double, a spicy burger introduced in 2014, has also left a lasting impression, with many hoping to see it return for good.
